I think having an omnipotent God “out there” was very satisfying for a long time, especially when “he” became the judge not only of our actions but also our thoughts. Imagine a being that made panthers and buttercups and zygotes and could make it rain on schedule while keeping a tornado away from our house. That’s impressive and worth a cathedral at least. If “he” smites bad guys, even better. To have divinity within, as in “the Father and I are one,” would require a whole reordering of everything.
God as the “life, force, energy of the universe” makes the most sense to me. All life is god.
