The movies I like best are the ones where all three of these are tangled up together, indistinguishable from one another. I thought first of that buddy road trip into wine country film, with Paul Giamatti; then that made me think of his most recent film, at the boarding school. What made both of them so good was the oh-so-subtle blend of begrudging love and wistful hope. Not so much faith as religion, but somehow the bare humanity in both films is in the same wheelhouse of meaning as faith.
