What the Celtic Christian Perspective Has Taught Me, Part 2
When I look back to where I was in my fundamentalist phase and I think about what spirituality meant back then, it's like night and day compared to where I am now.
Back then, I spent a lot of time and energy studying the Bible. I read it constantly. I read books about it. I put an immense amount of pressure on myself to get really good at knowing what the Bible said. And that time in study ultimately ended up serving me well.
But spiritually, that time was very inward-focused. It was about solidifying my knowledge and fundamentalist theology. My goal was to strengthen my belief through the acquisition of knowledge. It was about understanding more fully the perspective of the fundamentalist insider.
This fundamentalist approach to spirituality was very narrow. When I encountered Celtic Christianity, I felt like I had entered a whole new world. It was incredibly liberating. In many respects, it was the opposite of what I was used to.
