Back in seminary, I took a class on trinitarian theology. One of the things that I find fascinating about trinitarian theology is that it is not derived from the Bible. What we find in the Bible is a form of proto-trinitarianism, which is not the same thing as trinitarian theology.
Trinitarian theology is the result of theological reflection on how the biblical texts portray God's relationship to us and all of creation through Jesus Christ.
When Christians believe that they are reading trinitarian theology in the language of the Christian Testament, what they are really doing is reading the text through the lens of a theology that didn't appear for about 300 years after the time of Jesus. They're not drawing the information from the text, but rather reading it into the text.
