Why be Christian?
For many (if not most) adherents, the Christian faith is about laying claim to eternal life. They are afraid of the death-event and they want to go to heaven when they die. And for them, the way to attain that is by professing “Christ as Lord”.
I don’t think there’s anything wrong with believing that Christ has overcome the death-event. So, to be clear, I’m not quibbling about that.
My difficulty with this understanding (in part) is because it is so focused on the death-event that it cannot see that the Power of Death is more than just that.
And in many cases, my frustration goes deeper. Many Christians, I would argue, are so focused on avoiding the death-event that they cannot see the extent to which they have become agents of the Power of Death itself more so than they are faithful witnesses to the Life of Christ.
