A couple of years ago I was writing down what I believed my spiritual values were for the Evolving Christian Faith Network. After I finished, something struck me.
I had done something similar several years before. Back then, I wanted to know what my values were so I jotted down a few. As I reflected upon this new list, I realized that they weren't exactly the same. Somehow, they had shifted. I didn't know when they shifted or how they shifted, though. It was like they just slowly slid into something new without me realizing it.
Usually, when we think of growth, we think of growth in spurts. For example, let's say you take an online spirituality course with a spiritual growth coach. In a short period of time, you will probably have your perspective of the world radically changed and see everything differently. Because you are seeing things differently, it can be life-changing.
But most of the time, growth is much more subtle. We encounter a few bits of information that make us think and question. That thinking and questioning leads to personal internal challenge as you ask yourself, "What if this is more true than what I previously believed? What does that mean for me?"
A while back, I came across a TikTok creator who articulated her metaphor for growth which knocked my socks off. She said…
"A tree looks like it's just standing there doing nothing. But in actuality, it is constantly pressing against the edges of what it is."
Sometimes, the only way to see how much we’ve grown slowly over time is to intentionally look back over our lives and compare where we were with where we are now.
In fact, let me ask you this: Where have you grown over the last few years?
I encourage you to take some time with that question today. You might even want to journal about that so you can become more aware of your own personal transformation.
Remember, whether you realize it or not, you are constantly pressing against the edges of who you are.
Peace, Bo
