In case the title didn’t give it away…I was on a podcast!
Yes, I’m very excited to have been on my very first podcast as a guest. Talk about a new experience! I was incredibly nervous. I admit that listening to it made me a little self-conscious. (C’mon, who doesn’t cringe at the sound of their own voice?)
Many thanks to Stephen Bradley Long who hosts Sacred Tension for having me on. When I started to go too far off track, he gently called me back. He was an incredibly gracious and helpful host.
For those who don’t know Stephen, he’s a minister of The Satanic Temple. He is mainly known as a Satanic content creator, and recently he has started to become more interested in multi-faith engagement.
When I heard that he’s had such prominent names on his podcast as Christian Testament and Jesus scholar Bart Ehrman and Christian ethicist David Gushee, I suddenly felt very small.
But I don’t think what happened was small in any way.
You see, our society is struggling. People are disconnecting from each other more so every day as the result of growing ideological divides that are amplified by social media.
Very simply, we are living in silos that double as echo chambers.
So, while Stephen and I had a great time talking about a variety of topics (including how Christianity needs to evolve, the importance of spiritual practices, and how we developed into who we are today), those topics aren’t the most important part of the conversation.
Rather, the most important part of the conversation is the fact that it happened at all. It was a night during which two people from different religions came together to start knitting the body of humanity back together through dialogue, a body that so many out there are actively trying to rend limb from limb.
I believe this kind of thing is vital for us today. We need people who are ready for it to step outside their silos and have public conversations with those from other silos who are also ready for it. Public conversations like this lead a special kind of healing process in our society.
And that is ultimately (at least in my mind) what this podcast episode is really all about.
So please keep that in mind as you listen. And, if you are ready for it, let the conversation inspire you to step outside your own silo and find your own way to start knitting a divided humanity back together into one body.
Peace, Bo
